You asked:

What does 'at a loss' mean?

Two meanings:

1. Unable to know what to do or say:
"I'm at a loss for words." (can't find the words)
"I'm at a loss — I have no idea what happened."
"She was completely at a loss about what to do next."

2. Financial: selling for less than you paid:
"They sold the business at a loss." (below cost)
"The company operated at a loss for two years."

The everyday meaning (1) is more common: It describes a state of confusion, uncertainty, or speechlessness. You've reached the limit of your knowledge or ability to respond.

"At a loss for words": Perhaps the most common form — you're so surprised, moved, or confused that language fails you. Can be genuine ("I'm at a loss for words — that's incredible") or ironic.

Register: Meaning 1 is neutral — works in all contexts. Meaning 2 is financial/business English.
