What does FYI mean?
What it means: "For your information" — used to share information that the recipient should know, without necessarily requiring action.
"FYI, the meeting has been moved to 3pm."
"Just FYI — the client asked about the timeline."
Three tones depending on context:
Neutral: Sharing useful information. Most common use. "FYI, there's a parking issue outside today."
Helpful: Drawing attention to something the person needs. "FYI — I've forwarded the contract to legal."
Passive-aggressive: This is the danger zone. "FYI, I already sent this last week" carries an edge. It's a way of pointing out someone's failure to notice something, thinly disguised as helpful information-sharing. Native speakers recognise this immediately.
Written vs spoken: Common in written communication. Said aloud, it can sound abrupt or condescending. "Just so you know" is the more natural spoken equivalent.
Register: Professional email and messaging. Casual in tone, but standard in most workplaces.
