What does 'key takeaways' mean?
What it means: The most important points to remember from a meeting, presentation, article, or event. The things you should "take away" (carry with you) after the experience.
"Key takeaways from today's meeting: budget is approved, launch date is July, Sarah leads design."
"What are your key takeaways from the report?"
Where it comes from: Business and conference culture. The idea is that after a presentation, you leave with something useful — actionable insights or important information.
As a slide: "Key takeaways" is one of the most common final slides in presentations. Done well, it's genuinely useful. Done poorly, it's three bullet points that repeat everything that was just said.
The jargon concern: Like many business terms, "takeaways" has spread through overuse. In casual conversation, "the main points" or "what I got from it" sounds more natural.
Register: Business and professional. Common in meetings, presentations, and professional articles.
